In this 21st century, most parents seem to have discovered that without proper education, their children won’t be able to attain some heights in life. Whose parent doesn’t want their children to be lawyers, doctors, bankers, accountants, and other respected lucrative professions? Yes, some people say trading is good but still, nothing can beat being educated and some say there are rich illiterate but that is not the point.
Those who you see that are rich illiterate still look for people to do things for them that they can’t do which can also lead to people cheating them. This has led to the growing numbers of schools you see around to determine children’s future and reduce the number of children roaming the street.
Establishing a private school is not as easy as you think but, persistence and hard work will make it less stressful for you. Starting a private school is not what everybody can do, there are things you will need to have before you can think of starting one.
Possessing good educational quality e.g Ph.D., HND, and hiring people with all those qualities. When you decide to open a school, you need to make sure that your decision is based on sound data and that you have a reasonable understanding of the costs and strategies needed to successfully open the school. Some private schools lack skills too because the founder just wants to make money and not to impact positively in the lives of the students.
To ensure your private school is known as the best, the following are the eight steps you must put in place:-
Write out your mission statement for your new school
This will give you a sense of accomplishment when you finally finish and look back at what you have done. What you are writing down is your aim and objective for your new school. It should contain how you want your school to be managed, the extra co-curricular activities and the likes. This is the most important thing to focus on when you decide to start your own private school in Nigeria. Also, avoid deviation from your aims.
Write a business plan for your private school.
Writing out your business plan will carve out the necessary steps you need to take and do. Having a business plan will ensure you are doing the right thing at the right time. Establishing a private school doesn’t need rushing, it is a slow and steady journey. Rushing will lead to an undeveloped school.
This should be a blueprint of how the school is going to operate over its first five years and the expansion strategies in place for many years ahead. Always be conventional in your projections. Do not try to do everything in the first five years unless you are lucky enough to find a donor to fund your school entirely. A good business plan will guarantee the sustainability of your school when it eventually goes operational.
Get Land In A Good Area
The prices of land vary from place to place but you can get land in some developing areas of Lagos for about N600,000 to N2,000,000. Don’t buy land in an isolated area, no parent would want to patronize you in such location. Due to the risk involved in a child’s movement, parents will prefer a school that is within their home and for easy pick up of their children.
Erect Your Building
The cost at which you will build is dependent on the size and quality of the building you intend to construct. Your Engineer will put you through on this. Insist on an attractive structure because your marketing starts from there. Your classrooms should be spacious, at least 3.5m square per child under the age of two, at least 2.5m square per child aged two or at least 2.3m square per child aged three to seven .Water is important and you need plenty of it in your school, get borehole that will supply you water at all time.
Make your classrooms equipped
Apart from normal chairs and tables, you also need to equip your classrooms with computers and other learning aids as parents will be happier to pay when they see that your classes are properly equipped. You need plenty of toys and other children’s gadgets for your Montessori or Creche. You need video and LCD TV in all the classrooms to play educational videos and sometimes, cartoons depending on the class and the children’s age. A projector can suffice in the higher classes.
Employ Professional Teachers
If you will be just the proprietor of the nursery and primary school, you do not need any formal qualifications but if you are going to be the school manager you need the minimum of NCE and experience in educational administration. This would attract parents as they will believe their children are in the perfect educational environment. Your teachers must have a minimum of NCE and experience in childcare education or play-work. They must be passionate about children and teaching.
Register Your School Business
Like every other business, you need to register your school business as a sole proprietorship or depending on what you want in the case of investors. Go to the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria to register your name, you may need the service of a Lawyer in this regard. Once all these are in place, the next thing is to advertise your private school business and get down to real business.
Make sure you have transportation system(School buses)
This will attract parents to your school as it will reduce the stress of them dropping their children off and picking them up later in the day. Apart from the stress reduction, it is also a great way of advertising your school because your bus will be moving along the road where people will notice.
These are the few and very important steps you should put in place if you want to set up and have a successful school business
